Boost Gauge

Plan-

what I want to do

The factory boost gauge isn't the most accurate in the world and, with the addition of my waste gate controller, its 8psi max isn't enough.  I thought about retrofitting an aftermarket gauge in the dash, but I want to put a volt meter here.  I bought a gauge pod to go on the "A" pillar.  I went with Autometer as it's a quality, well known gauge, but not too expensive.

Project-

what I did

Using a brass "T" , I just was tapped into the vacuum line that runs into the factory boost sending unit located on the driver's fender.  At first I wired the lights in with the dash lights, but that blew the rheostat.  Now they are hooked into the 12 volt input to the rheostat.  They don't dim.

Top

Difficulty-

things that made it hard

1- I had to replace my rheostat as I made the mistake of wiring these gauges up post dimmer.  Apparently it cannot take the current and blew.

Problems-

with the product/install or that came up later

1- The only problem is now I have to get white faces for my factory gauges.

Payoff-

what I felt the "bang for the buck" was

The install was easy and I feel the payoff was big in terms of engine safety.  At the time I was still running a factory head gasket and didn't want to push the boost too high.  This gauge allows me to see what boost I am pushing in a reading I know(psi)- the waste gate controller is adjusted in bars.

Stock-

specs/info on the stock item

Good enough to know when the turbo is boosting, but with 8 psi max and suspect accuracy, it had to go.

Upgrade-

benefits of the new item

Much more accurate gauge with a scale that will be usable even with future boost upgrades.

See, gauges
