My Sports and Recreation.

In General.

I don't think of myself as a sports fanatic since I can't argue stats from a few season ago, but I sure do enjoy watching a good game.  I also play a few other games like racquetball, golf, darts, and bowling.  I like to go camping and enjoy working with computers and modifying my cars.

Football.

As long as I can remember my favorite football team has been the Dallas Cowboys.  It seems that when it comes to the Cowboys there is no gray area- you either love them or you hate them.  I'm also proud to say that I am not a fair weather fan.  I admit to liking them when they win the Super Bowl and when they go 1-15.  I also like the Jacksonville Jaguars.  I lived in Jax during the expansion race, cheered when we were awarded the team, watched to Gator Bowl become Alltel stadium, and reveled in the teams early success.  Unfortunately, they still haven't made it to the big game, but they will soon.

Hockey.

Also during my time in Jacksonville we got a brand new hockey team, the Lizard Kings.  The league they play in is known as the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL).  Now it's not the NHL, I know, but the tickets were about $7 and they don't stop play for commercial breaks.  I was hooked on hockey after my first game, even though I didn't know all the rules yet.  For those of you that have watched hockey on TV and say "it isn't all that," go to a game and watch it in person.  TV does not do this sport justice as it can only show the puck and the small area around it.  In real life you can see the guy with the puck skating towards the opposing goal, just as you can on TV, but you can also see the second player skating in for the one-timer. Instead of seeing it as it happens, you get to see it as it develops and the thrill of it working or the awe of a goalie's great save are so much more profound.  During my time recruiting from the St. Louis area, I followed the Blues and I guess they are my favorite NHL team.  Now I am in Norfolk and rooting for a tem that used to be a Lizard King rival, the Norfolk Admirals.

NASCAR.

I used to watch NASCAR almost every Sunday, unless it conflicted with a football game (gotta have your priorities).  In 1993 my 2 favorite drivers dies- Alan Kulwicki and Davey Allison.  I have only watched it hit or miss since.

The rest.

I also like golf (suck at it), darts (suck at it), and pool (suck at it).  I do have my own equipment for each and look good playing as long as you don't see the swing and search for the ball in the weeds, the throw and triple 1's, or the strike and missing the hole by a mile.   Of course in all sports, it's now whether you win(!!!!!) or lose(@#**), it how you play the (&@%/>^$*##!!) game.  Right?  Some of my other interests include reading, scuba diving, and snow skiing.  I have been scuba diving in Hurgada Egypt, Rhodes Greece, Key Largo and in Jacksonville Florida.  I first learned to dive in Egypt: class, shallow pool dive, deep pool, two reef dives the next day, equipment rental and food during the second day all cost $35 American.  The only problem with learning to dive in the Red Sea is that the water is so clear and the fish so colorful that anywhere else I dove seemed a let-down.  My only snow skiing escapade was years ago in Wintergreen Virginia.  I think I did an enviable job for my first time once I quit snow plowing.  A very good skier there ask me if I wanted to learn how to ski well and quickly, of course I told him "yes."  He then took my poles from me!  Without those crutches you learn to lean forward and turning comes fairly easily.  By the end of the day I could make a trip all the way down the slope without falling, and with my poles still in one hand.  Of course, by now, I probably would look like some rusty beginner again.
